Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
