Our Leading Release of 2025: The Artist's Lux Secures the Premier Place.

Initially, this work could seem closer to a challenging scholarly quiz than the latest pop album by a musician who just had a last single was a collaboration with a global K-pop star. Broken across four distinct sections and performed in thirteen languages, this is a dizzying classical-tinged opus exploring female mystique, spiritual ascent, and physical transformation, frequently via the prism of different saintly figures. The dissolution of a relationship—a topic treated with raw openness on another major 2025 album—is launched skyward here, carried by the lush sound of a major symphony orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning composer within an extensive list of contributors. The pure audacity by itself makes the work of contemporary pop stars look rather laughable.

Transcending Academic Exercise

The fact that Lux manages to escape dry academic posturing is almost miraculous, with sole praise belonging to the artist. While this is not her first project to alchemize the past with the present, the stakes feel much greater on Lux, with the balancing act far more pronounced. The element that truly elevates her fourth release, outside of its multilayered tunes, dense compositions, and engrained theatricality, is a core sense of playfulness. Similar to the iconic Björk during her peak, you find a captivating sense to Rosalía's voice which sweeps the listener up in its tornado. When she's tearing your heart in two, you nevertheless want to stay right there for the journey.

A Prime Example of Joy

That playful spirit shines brightly during a stunning piano-led song about Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy over several moments. Suddenly, everything drops silent, to reveal we hear a gleeful laugh and a comment prior to a hilariously over-the-top orchestral crescendo thuds down like comedic force. The track then segues to the wild single driven by galloping strings, a powerful choir, and a surprise appearance from none other than Björk.

"The magic of this album lies in you rarely quite understand—nor wish to predict—where you will go to next."

Nearly every track ends at a completely different point from how it started. One moment explores the fleeting nature of fame with a featherlight symphony before disintegrating into electronic chaos. Another, a song echoing her previous rhythmic work starts out dark and brooding, with menacing beats, before sudden flamenco handclaps and a heavenly chorus enter to soften the song's rough edges.

The Balance Of Experiment and Pop

Another crucial achievement on the album involves straddling the gap of radical experimentation and mainstream appeal. This is no coincidence that the album has become the artist's highest-charting release to crack the Top 5 of major charts: at its core a suite of truly catchy pop songs. One track performed entirely in English builds on a chorus that seems to collect more and more nagging hooks as it spirals upward. This trick gets repeated on a different powerful ballad that expands and constricts, intertwining layered melodies like a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like number seduces with its playful, theatrical flair and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with pop culture impact of contemporary heartbreak songs, lambasting a former partner described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across the album, the singing have a painted-on smile, akin to a fairy-tale character hiding a knife: "Gold medal in being a motherfucker / You've the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Ears

This album is pop on a grand scale, an ambitious grasp for high artistry amid of impending AI-generated blankness. It rejects solipsism in favor of glorious elevation, crafting an over-the-top drama that skillfully controls its own built-in excess. It is an abundant well of buried treasure that requires time to fully mine but doesn't seem like a chore. While other big pop albums of the year seemed like a meager scraps, Lux is a sumptuous feast where the guests around it, perhaps tipsy on holy wine, flit from discussions about historical figures, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering grief, and shared gossip about hopeless partners. It is a contemporary theatrical production from music's most restlessly creative practitioner.
