New research suggests that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs should be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if something flipping and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
