A Ton of Japanese Animation Updates Landed Over the Holidays

The Christmas holidays present a wealth of pastimes far superior than scanning the updates: unwrapping gifts, indulging in festive fare, and employing deep breathing to not snapping at loved ones. It is wished you were able to accomplish all these things and more. Nevertheless, the world of entertainment never sleeps, and this is especially true for the realm of anime. A slew of exciting news items came out during the holidays, and just in case you missed some of them, here is a summary of the biggest bits.

One-Punch Man Its Third Season Is Moving Forward (By 2027)

Perhaps the biggest piece of news, the widely-criticized controversial season that was the third season of One-Punch Man proved insufficient to halt further production. Season 3 will come back with a subsequent part in 2027—such a distant date they might as well have labeled it season 4. More surprisingly, animation studio J.C. Staff will still be leading the project. On a positive note this time, helmer Shinpei Nagai is attached to direct from the beginning, which might be a positive development. But, the key visual for the continuation is the same image the one used for season 3, just with protagonists Saitama and Garou looking opposite ways. This leads one to believe that, nowadays, they are probably trolling the fans.

Ruri Dragon Is Set to Be the First Shonen Jump Anime From Kyoto Animation

Kyoto Animation has built a standing for being an prestigious animation studio, making its mark not just for the exceptional quality of its work but for the ethical practices of its employees—a sadly unusual standard in the industry. Unexpectedly, until now, it had not adapted an anime adapted from a manga from Shonen Jump, possibly the best-known magazine in the industry. Ruri Dragon will break that tradition, and what a great choice it is. The manga by Masaoki Shindo became massive popularity when it debuted in 2022 after just a few chapters, but then went into a extended pause due to the creator's health issues. When it returned with a more relaxed pace, the series showed it hadn't lost the fans' support and enthusiasm, and now fans are thrilled about the forthcoming KyoAni adaptation.

The Kingdom Series Season 6 Has a Sequel Currently in Production

Kingdom is the highly popular, epic Shueisha manga that is aside from One Piece. If you've are unfamiliar with it before, it's because it only fairly recently obtained an English translation, but the anime has been going on for a while, and season 6 was another excellent entry. As it happens that was just the first cour, because a "sequel" has been announced as in production, and it will very likely air in 2026.

Science Saru Is Adapting A Witch in Mongolia Into an Anime Series

Another studio known for the superior craftsmanship of its projects, Science Saru has given us hit shows of the caliber of Space Dandy, Devilman Crybaby, and, most recently, Dandadan. This time, the studio will be handling the adaptation of Tomato Soup's manga A Witch's Life in Mongol, inspired by the actual historical person of Fatima, an influential woman and intellectual in the Mongol Empire in the 13th century. From the trailer, the anime titled Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia will have a truly original and fascinating visual style, which is somewhat reminiscent of Ranking of Kings. Debuting in July 2026, this one will definitely be on my must-watch list.

The Tougen Anki Series Will Continue With a Season Two

Right after the conclusion of its twenty-fourth episode, it was revealed that Tougen Anki will be receiving a sequel. Inspired by the Japanese legend of Momotaro, Tougen Anki is based on the manga by Yura Urushibara. The upcoming season of the anime will cover the Nikko Kegon Falls Arc, but a firm premiere date has not yet been announced.
